Forest Thematic Electronic Map of the Drohobych Branch of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine”
Publication of information about planned forestry measures promotes transparency in the industry and helps prevent corruption. To this end, several web portals exist for displaying maps of forest enterprises and their planned activities, including logging. The main ones are the geospatial portal “Forests of Ukraine” and the website of the Forest Innovation and Analytical Center (LIAC). However, these platforms are specialized and accessible only through registration.
In response to this, Oleh Chasovskyy, the head of the Forest Monitoring Laboratory at the NGO ForestCom, a Ph.D. in Geography, and an expert in remote sensing, along with Andriy Nechepurenko, a master in Information Technology Design and a systems administrator of the NGO ForestCom created a separate map with planned forestry measures for the Drohobych Branch of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine”. This developed map is hosted on the official website of the NGO ForestCom - accessible via the link to the forest thematic electronic map for the Drohobych Branch of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine”.
The presentation of planned measures utilized the geoinformation system of forest plantations for the Drohobych Branch of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine” and the planned forestry activities. Informational layers were created using QGIS for the web-oriented system of the Drohobych Branch. The forest plantations of the branch are represented, divided into quarters, based on hybrid maps from Google Earth's high-resolution satellite images.
The developed map is enriched with photographs of the planned intervention areas (yellow rhombuses on the map). This combination of map and on-site photographs provides a multidimensional representation of the areas from both an aerial and ground perspective, facilitating comprehensive information analysis.
Information about planned measures can be obtained by positioning the cursor over any object on the map, prompting a popup window with a detailed description of the object (forestry district / quarter / division / area), as well as the planned silvicultural measures. As a result, stakeholders have access to complete information for analysis and discussion of the feasibility of planned measures.
