“ForestCom with IDPs: Forest for IDPs”: Preparatory Work in Progress

As spring gradually asserts itself, our preparatory work within the “ForestCom with IDPs: Forest for IDPs” project has also picked up pace.

In collaboration with representatives from the Regional Landscape Park "Znesinnya" our experts conducted a survey of the park's territory, as outlined in the signed memorandum, to identify areas in need of restoration through tree planting. According to our specialists, the focus is on planting trees that are characteristic of this significant historical and natural-recreation landmark in the context of Lviv's natural and historical heritage. By the way, selected locations that need reforestation are located near Mount Lion. This hill is familiar to many locals and visitors alike as a prominent mound near Castle Hill.

Our experts also calculated the required quantity and types of trees, for which seedlings will soon arrive in Lviv from the "Green Angels" nursery in Zakarpattia. As the staff assures us, these plants are carefully nurtured with love and dedication. 

Symbolically, the reforestation effort will add 100 common oak trees to the genetic diversity of Znesinnya Park. One hundred individuals or families will not only contribute to the greening of Lviv but also establish a special connection with this new territory, leaving their mark on the land that provides sanctuary. Moreover, they will acquire knowledge and skills that we believe will prove valuable during the restoration of war-ravaged and neglected green zones in Ukraine.

In the course of our preparatory work, we are currently procuring tools, and additional supplies. Very soon, we will invite all interested individuals to join our tree planting event.

Each tree planted by project participants will be marked with an informative sticker-number, allowing individuals to identify and revisit "their" tree, while park visitors can learn when, by whom, and within which project the tree was planted. Each tree will have its own story and benefits, both for the plant community and the local community.

So, let's create a positive story together!

We would like to remind you that the purpose of the  “ForestCom with IDPs: Forest for IDPs”, implemented by the ForestCom NGO in collaboration with the Regional Landscape Park "Znesinnya" and as part of the United Voices in Action program by IREX with support from the U.S. Department of State, is to facilitate the integration of those forced to leave their homes due to the war into the Lviv community. By coming together for this meaningful and essential cause for Lviv, which is meant to endure for centuries, local residents and IDPs will strengthen the social cohesion of the Lviv community.
