Photo trap: dead wood and forest dwellers
What Is the Connection Between Deadwood and a Ferret?
Nothing is superfluous. Everything is interconnected. All elements are essential.
This speaks to nature in general and specifically to deadwood. The latter is an integral part of the forest, providing shelter for many small mammals that, in turn, serve as a food source for forest predators. After all, we remember that the forest is a complete ecosystem, sustained by the interactions among its various components. The very term "system" implies that any change in even one of its components can trigger irreversible changes with completely unpredictable consequences.
The role of deadwood in this ecosystem is not limited to a single function; it serves many important purposes. Among its critical functions is the creation of vast habitats for different species. For example, small mammals use deadwood as storage, winter dens, and shelters, while smaller predators feed on these residents of deadwood.
You can learn more about this in our brief video captured by a camera trap set up in the "Stilske Horbuhirya" Regional Landscape Park.

We are delighted to see rare red-listed species in the footage, including the forest cat and the forest ferret. One of the reasons for the declining populations of these endangered species is intensive logging, especially uncontrolled clear-cutting for sanitary purposes. These practices are the same ones that some have attempted to "legalize" in the controversial bill No. 9516.
Currently, the forest inhabitants are grateful to the lawmakers who did not support this anti-ecological bill. Meanwhile, we enjoy the videos showcasing forest life. Thanks to modern technologies like camera traps, we can learn more about the secret lives of forest animals and deepen our understanding of the surrounding world.
The NGO ForestCom continues to monitor the forest areas of Ukraine's protected sites using camera traps, identifying flora and fauna species that require protection.
You can support us in monitoring forest wildlife through photography. Funds will go towards the purchase of camera traps and related equipment.
