The European Commission commences testing of the EUDR information system
EUTR/EUDR are EU legislative decisions aimed at stopping trade in products made from illegally harvested wood or wood that leads to degradation and deforestation of forest ecosystems.
In order to implement the European Union Regulation on combating deforestation (EUDR), the European Commission is initiating testing of the corresponding Information System. The Information system is a database where all Operators are required to input information about the products they place on the EU market, as stipulated in the Regulation.
The testing period will run until the end of January 2024 for 100 pre-determined business participants to evaluate the system's readiness. The results will be taken into account by developers for preparing a practical guide and organizing appropriate training for all EU market Operators.
It's important to note that compliance with the EUDR law is a mandatory condition for businesses trading products potentially leading to deforestation or degradation of global forest ecosystems. This involves establishing due diligence within their own enterprises and entering key details, including product origins, into this information system. For instance, wood product manufacturers must provide European partners (Operators) with information about the location of timber harvesting used in the production of delivered goods, including geographical coordinates of logging sites and/or their shapefiles.

We hope that the State Forest Agency of Ukraine will implement a transparent and accessible information collection system regarding logging sites and their locations, enabling Ukrainian businesses to seamlessly comply and avoid difficulties in accessing the European market.
At present, the process of obtaining timber harvesting related information by Ukrainian Manufacturers is extremely cumbersome and lacks understanding from forest users (Wood Suppliers), leading to certain European operators' reluctance to purchase goods in Ukraine under the current EUTR rules.
We call on the State Forestry Agency to promptly establish an unimpeded public process for obtaining information that would clearly indicate the place of harvesting of wood purchased by Ukrainian businesses to manufacture products of legal origin.
