Development of Verkhovyna National Nature Park as an Attractive Tourist and Rehabilitation Hub

The territory of the Verkhovyna National Nature Park, located in the headwaters of the Black and White Cheremosh rivers in the Chyvchyn Mountains on the border with Romania, can be called a land of pristine nature. The potential of this park is extremely high, as it is one of the most remote and fascinating in Ukraine. The steep mountain terrain, remoteness and inaccessibility of the area have led to the preservation of natural complexes and objects in an almost untouched pristine state, practically without the destructive negative impact of human activity. Here, one can see natural landscapes that have been forming for millions of years. This region, rich in natural and cultural treasures, is appealing to both tourists and nature researchers and scientists.

Verkhovyna is potentially an important tourist center of the united Carpathian Protected Area, along with Yaremche and other well-known tourist hubs.

The project is aimed at addressing the key problems facing the Verkhovyna National Nature Park in the Ukrainian Carpathians, including lack of financial and material support for the full implementation of nature conservation measures, inadequate tourism infrastructure (including inclusive infrastructure), and insufficient information support.

The main goal of the project is to contribute to the development and protection of the nature reserve fund of the Verkhovyna and the tourism infrastructure of the Carpathian region.

Objectives:

  1. Create and develop a tourist and rehabilitation hub (gateway) for organized visits to the national nature park in the Perkalaba area (Perkalaba Gate)

  2. Provide assistance for further infrastructure (including inclusive) enhancements within Verkhovyna National Nature Park and other relevant conservation organizations.

  3. Contribute to the improvement of nature conservation efforts for Verkhovyna National Nature Park and other relevant conservation organizations.

  4. Contribute to the development of the Verkhovyna Tourism Hub as a prominent destination within the Ukrainian Carpathians National Nature Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Deliverables of the project:

-    Visitor Center and Camping Pavilion with developed Camping Grounds;

-    Developed recreational infrastructure (including inclusive) - a tourist and rehabilitation hub for organized visits to the national nature park in the Perkalaba area (Perkalaba Gate) (gate, parking lot, playground, landscaping, outdoor furniture, etc.);

-    Developed hiking trails for tourists from the Perkalaba gate of the Verkhovyna National Nature Park;

-    Enhanced efficiency of nature protection through improved patrolling and surveillance (equipment, training, and other programs, etc.) for park rangers;

-    Brochures, promotional videos, articles in local and regional media;

-    Supported projects for local businesses to strengthen connections between Perkalaba and Verkhovyna, as well as to develop inclusive tourist infrastructure that aligns with nature protection objectives and promotes sustainable tourism practices.
